Guest Speaker // Ollie Allgrove

Yesterday in the lesson we had a guest speaker come in to talk to us about our music videos.

This speaker was Ollie Allgrove from Passion Pictures. He is an executive producer for this company.
He spoke to use about what Passion Pictures does, what is his role and about music videos.

Passion Pictures "tell stories" they do this by using animation, live action, design and visual effects.

He explained to us about the things Passion Pictures do for example they make the Compare the Market adverts with the meerkats in and he explained that it takes 25 people to make one meerkat.

Music Videos:
Ollie Allgrove has worked on music videos for Goldfrapp and Joe Lean.

He said that some inportant things to consider were to:
- listen to the words
- interpret the music visually
- offer unique visual voice
- have a creative point of view

He also talked about how 10 years ago videos were really important to promote musicians and they are the same now.
However, he said that the way we interact with the music has changed (e.g using Youtube and the Internet)

When we come to shoot our music video:
Ollie also talked to us about what we should consider when we shoot our music video.
He said that we have to have enough footage to fill 3mins. So, therefore we need to shoot more then necessary.

In edit here are some main point he told us:
- Craft the narrative
- Dont fix it in post
- manage colours
- do visual effects (however he said to make sure that we know that we are using visual effects when we shoot it)

Lyrics for White Light // Music Video

[Verse 1]
You're different
I like it
You're from another planet, huh?
I'd like you to take me there
You can fly your alien spaceship

You're different
Don't hide it
That's what made me notice you

There you were
Sitting by yourself
There you were
Hey, hey, hey

[Hook]
You are a white light
Stepping out of the dark

You are a white light
But you cover it up

Do you wanna fly me miles away
And be alone, alone?
Cuz I don't mind if we never go
Never go home
Stepping out of the dark

[Verse 2]
We're shoulder to shoulder
Leaving for your universe
And I can't control you
(No I don't no I don't)
Yeah, I can't control you

And there you are
So self-contained
There you are there

[Hook]
You are a white light
Stepping out of the dark
You are a white light
But you cover it up

Do you wanna fly me miles away
And be alone, alone?
Cuz I don't mind if we never go
Never go home
Stepping out of the dark

You are a white light
Stepping out of the dark
You are a white light
But you cover it up

Do you wanna fly me miles away
And be alone, alone?
Cuz I don't mind if we never go
Never go home
Stepping out of the dark
Cuz I don't mind if we never go
Don't mind if we never go
Never go home

Lukes Feedback to Treatment // Music Video

Here is a MP3 file of what we discussed with Luke:

Campaign Branding // Music Video

The star image will be the same across the website and digipak. We want the artist to look like they have creative control over the digipak and website since she will be signed to a independent record label. I think that this will be branded across the video aswell because the music video is very creative and visual effective so by making the digipak and website the same in terms of visual and style then they will al fit together and look like a brand. The star image will also show her originality because we want the video to look creative and different so this will help is make her star image seem individual.

The other day I was shooting some portfolio pictures for photography and I took a few photos that I thought look really interesting and we could re-create with our star.  I don't think we would make them look as eerie but I really like the effect of the wet hair and the lighting style.

Lukes Feedback // Music Video

Our idea was based around three elements:

- Rotating stage with projections
- Glasss box with water
- Slow motion smashing items

Luke said that we need to pick one idea to develop and try and make it work, he said to our idea that we need to refine and get a better sense of what it means. I agree with him that our idea is a bit extreme and doesn't really have a concept so I think that we have the creative aspect but need a storyline or narrative.

Mood Board // Audience Profile

We decided to use a mood board because it is a great visual way to show and pitch our ideas. It also means its easier to get our ideas across and for people to visualise it.

I think that are band would be signed to an independent record company such as:

Looking at this moodboard I can tell that our audience is going to mainly be aimed at teenagers.

The main VALS of our target audience are:
Believers - These people are motivated by ideals. They are conservative and predictable consumers who favor mainstream products and established brands. Their lives are centered on family, community, and the nation.

Experiencers -  These people are motivated by self-expression. They are the youngest of all the VALS with the oldest being around 25. They have a lot of energy, which they pour into physical exercise and social activities. They are keen consumers, spending heavily on clothing, fast-foods, music, and other favorites, with particular emphasis on new products.

Lukes Talk // About Music Videos

Today in class Luke (the creative director of Hurtwood Media) came to discuss what we should do in our music videos and what type of ideas to think about.

These were his main points that we needed to know about doing our Music Video:

  •  3-3.20mins song
  • 1 Day filming
  • 5 weeks to edit
  • Remix or obscure songs are better
  • Filmed mostly in the studio but can be on location
  •  Use 3 different sections to show creativity and skill (Narrative, lip-sync and dance element)
  • 90-120 shot
Here are some other points he mentioned:

  • Try not to use animals
  • The more creative the better
  • Research through lots of different medias
  • Don't use a song with an already famous music video as yours will not stand out and won't be able to attract the attention from fans.
  • Avoid love stories
